Labor Department Releases April Unemployment

Reports job growth slowed with only 266,000 jobs added.

The Department of Labor released its economic indicators of the job market on Friday. The report found that the country only added 266,000 new jobs last month, and saw the unemployment rate increase to 6.1%, up from 6% in March. The growth in unemployment suggests that more Americans are looking for work as the COVID-19 pandemic draws closer to its end.

In light of the lackluster jobs numbers, President Biden once again pitched his government spending plan as a means to get the nation on the road to economic recovery. He said that the pandemic relief package “was designed to help us over the course of a year, not 60 days. A year. We never thought that after the first 50 or 60 days everything would be fine. Today, there’s more evidence our economy is moving in the right direction. But it’s clear we have a long way to go.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the president to seek God’s direction as he tries to help the economy recover from the pandemic.
  • For discernment for the president’s administration in addressing unemployment.
  • That the Labor Department would be effective in evaluating the status of the jobs market.
